Nursing bras. Do I need one?
We explain all you need to know about this garment.
Are you pregnant or a new mother? You've probably heard about nursing bras. In this post, we are going to explain everything you need to know about this garment. Are you unsure whether you need them or not? We'll help you decide.
How do nursing bras work?
Maternity bras have a unique feature that allows you to breastfeed your baby without removing the garment itself, thanks to a simple mechanism that allows you to uncover either of the two cups. So, no other garment on the market will be more useful to free your breasts so quickly. This is undoubtedly its most differential advantage. But, in addition, nursing bras are a great help to provide comfort to a sensitive area that changes size rapidly during the period before and after childbirth. Their fabrics are adaptable and provide excellent support.
What to look out for when buying nursing bras?
There are five aspects that you should consider before buying them to make sure that you are getting a product with the characteristics you are looking for:
- Fabric: It is essential to find underwear that is soft and pleasant to the touch. Cotton is a natural fibre that is found in many nursing bras and will provide you with comfort. Also, the garment needs to fit the size of your breasts, so it is likely to contain a small percentage of elastomer.
- Functionality: The mechanism for uncovering and covering the cups must be very practical. The bra straps also need to be adjustable for comfort at any stage of pregnancy or postpartum.
- Underwire: We recommend investing in a maternity bra without an underwire during the first few weeks postpartum because they are much more comfortable to sleep in. Underwires can cause discomfort when you actually need something very simple.
- Colour: Another decision you will have to make is the colour of the nursing bra. Think about how it will combine with other clothes but don't get obsessed. The most typical and never fail are black, white and sand.
- Sizing: It is essential that you also take a few minutes to confirm your bra size. The goal is to ensure that your breasts are neither too tight nor too loose. So you will need to calculate the circumference of the breasts in the area of greatest volume and the circumference of the underbust area.
When is the best time to buy nursing bras?
The ideal time to start looking for and buying maternity bras is a few months before giving birth. Why? Basically, because you're going to be too busy with the baby in the weeks after the birth and your main priority will be to find some time to sleep. Also, if you make the purchase when you're pregnant, you'll have time to try them out, and understand how they work and you'll be more comfortable because your breasts will be more supported.
How many nursing bras should I buy?
At Antipress we recommend that you don't buy all your nursing bras at once. Start by buying a couple or three, trusting in a brand that guarantees quality, comfort and ethical and sustainable standards in the production chain. Let the days and weeks go by and let yourself adjust to the new situation. Once you understand the frequency of use and assess whether the product meets your expectations, repeat the purchase so that you always have a clean bra in your wardrobe.
